The biggest change was that after "portfolio days," which occurred every six to eight weeks and were devoted to finding and assessing writing pieces, students had a week for revision.
Particularly, students seemed aware of the forms and subject matter that led to their best writing.
The assessment tasks reflected writing situations common to both academic and workplace settings and asked students to write for several purposes and communicate to different audiences.

After giving a major assessment, I would break the standards down into three groups based on the results: standards to be retaught in small groups, standards to be retaught whole group, and standards to be reviewed for maintenance.
I also asked students to write a letter at the beginning of the year as well as at the end—another demonstration of growth. The results of the writing assessment offer a new opportunity to understand the ability of eighth- and twelfth-grade students to make effective choices in their writing and allow for insight into the role and impact of technology on writing education and performance.
