Developing voice in writing activities
Step 2: Tell students that they have been assigned an emotion that they will need to portray through writing. Knowing your audience is key to finding how to use your voice most effectively.
Using sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell in appropriate doses brings texture and context to deepen the details. Have an authentic audience in mind: Purpose is key.
Picture books with strong voice

Developing voice in writing activities
More often than not, it seems, all we can do is identify when it is clearly missing. Therefore, while you can point out certain touchstones that point to the creation of voice, what it ultimately requires is time with much practice, through a keen awareness of what it is that makes people and therefore characters tick. Have students write essays on controversial and relevant topics to identify divergent points of view, writer commitment to the topic, and sense of audience. What are your values?
